In other news, I’m thrilled to announce that I’m once again co-producing/directing Listen To Your Mother Austin! We had such an amazing show last year and I can’t wait to see what we come up with this year.  Right now we’re accepting submissions for the cast, so if you’re interested or know someone who might be, read about it here. Please spread the word!

There will also be shows in 9 other cities this year, including NYC, Chicago, Madison, San Francisco and Washington DC. I’ll be writing more about all of that in the upcoming weeks, but you can find a lot of great, exciting news here.

Ok, I might now need to do a post on the various songs to which my father has made up his own words. Except that it’s ALL of them, so I don’t know if I’ll be able to do the concept justice.

But, boy, this sounds familiar. In elementary school, one of my best friend’s names was Deana, pronounced DEE-na. My dad called her:

    Dayna
    Danna
    Dee-anna
    Donna
    Drama
    Red

Your dad’s mispronunciation reminds me of the “30 Rock” episode when no one can figure out the name of the movie Jenna is starring in which is actually called, “The Rural Juror.”

Have fun on your huge project!!

I think this is my favorite title of a blog post ever.

We had a friend whose last name was “Dzurison”, which really was hard to pronounce. But my grandma still managed to beat everyone with “Zershack”, which is not even in the ballpark.

    No Shawskank Redemption?
    No Skankshaw Redemption?
    How could that be?

We should get together and compare notes on our dads. Mine does the same with so many different things. He even get’s the dissociation of DVD wrong some how.

So those are not correct pronunciations?

I’m so excited to see LTYM again. It was a great show last year. Especially the pretty blond–what is her name? Winky? Wieney? No, Wendi!

Actual exchange between my mother and father-in-law over Thanksgiving when I made the mistake of putting on The Shawshank Redemption:

FIL – Oh. This is the one with that crazy liberal guy. Jim Robbins?

    MIL – Tim.

FIL – Right. And he’s pals with that other crazy liberal gal. What’s her name?

    MIL – Susan Sarandon.

FIL – Yeah. I hate those two. They’re crazy liberals.

    MIL – They aren’t pals. They’re married.

FIL – No. No. I’m pretty sure they’re just pals. Like those other ones. Goldie Hawn and what’s his name.

MIL – I think they broke up.

    FIL – Who?

ME – Here’s the remote, Mom. I’ve got to go step off a table like Brooks.

FIL – Who the hell is Brooks?

MIL – He’s the one who’s pals with Morgan Freeman. In the prison. Not in real life.

    ….and scene.

    I snorted.

When I was in high school, my parents took a romantic trip together..

My Mother used to talk about her trip with Daddy to the Virgin Islands like this:

“On our trip to The Virgins…”

Every time she said it, I WANTED TO DIE!!! So humiliating. She sounded so “trying to be cool” to me. Like she was on a first name/nickname basis with them. And for gosh sakes: “The Vrgins???”

Seasaw Redimaker – hilarious! At least you get that much. When my Dad can’t remember the name of the movie, we have to play this huge guessing game. But we never win because he can’t remember. Sigh.

  • 13. Ann  |  January 27th, 2012 at 8:58 pm

    You make me laugh.

Also? Umm. Good idea mentioning LTYM on your blog. I should try that. (searches for head, all the way in small intestines)

awww morgan, morgan, morgan. I would have so loved this post more if I wasn’t gagging over this morning’s twitter feed! LTYM … and avoid your scumbag step grandfather!

Wendi, you should be proud. Some of these comments are as funny as the post.

Even if it were titled any of those, men would still watch it every damn time it’s on TV.

  • 18. Mayor Gia  |  January 29th, 2012 at 8:15 pm

Hahaha, my dad can’t pronounce moccasins (mosckacins?) Or the name Daniel (Danielle?). My poor cousin.

  • 19. Kara  |  January 30th, 2012 at 8:42 am

I’m still bitter I’ve never seen the movie. I tried in high school on a date, but the theater decided to be all badass and card me. Didn’t they know I was on a date with a super cool senior??

  • 20. Alexandra  |  February 13th, 2012 at 10:41 am

    Not gonna laugh at this.

It’s a page from my life.

You should’ve seen how I was nailed to the wall by the two teens here for calling the the latest Xmas movie “Horse Wars”
